I talk about some of the videos I have created and the stories behind
them. WIFE
CAUGHT IN BIKINI (2009)
This has unsurprisingly become one of my most popular videos, with over 225,000 views in its first year. Originally I had used the same footage but had my character Gus pop in to the video and cover up the shots of my wife. After a number of friendly complaints, I felt rather bad, so I decided to show the original uncut version, with my wife's approval, of course.
THE
SHORTEST VIDEO EVER ON YOUTUBE
(2010)
As with my video "The Longest
Video On YouTube", I once again was determined to beat Charles Trippy's
YouTube record, although this time I wanted to play on the meaning of
"short" for this video. As you will see by the comments (if you click
on the video to read the comments on my YouTube channel) some people
get the joke, and others don't.
Instead of making the video short in length, I decided to make the video short in height and have my comedy character Gus insult the viewer, which he loves to do. COMING UP ROSES (by Brian Ray) (2008)
I had watched a
concert DVD of Paul McCartney's ("Back In The U.S.A") and was really
impressed with his whole
band. I did some research and discovered that the two guitarists in his
band had solo albums, which I
bought and really liked. I ended up emailing one of the guitarists
(Brian Ray) stating that if he wanted a video done for one of his songs I would love to make one.
I was happily surprised when he wrote back and agreed. With his input and about six weeks of work, we put
together "Coming Up Roses", which Brian was very pleased
with. It had been on my YouTube
channel with over 30,000 views, but because of YouTube being very
strict about copyright
issues, I decided to take it off of my channel and just let Brian have
the video for his own YouTube channel. In this video I play George Bush, and my wife and I
play a couple of other well known politicians also. You can watch the
video here.
HOW TO VACUUM A CAT (2010) Sometimes a video turns out much different than planned, especially when I end up hurting myself, and therefor making the video much funnier than it would have been. Here is a prime example.
CAPTAIN OF THE PINAFORE (with Martin Gordon)
(2007)
I have been a big
fan of the rock band Sparks since 1974. The first album of theirs I
ever bought was their
third album, "Kimono My House". One of the members of the band was
bassist Martin Gordon.
As the years went by I ended up getting to know Martin online a bit and
ended up doing a video for him for his version of the song "Captain of the
Pinafore", from his album "God's On His Lunchbreak (Please Call Back)."
This video was on my Canadian Studmuffin channel, but due to the possibility of future copyright issues, I decided to take it off and recently sent it to Martin Gordon to put on his YouTube channel (HugoPortion). It is one of the first times I did green screen work, which happily has improved a bit since then, but it is still a pretty fun little video and of course my character Gus, gets a starring role, along with my wife, and a lobster... LONGEST VIDEO ON YOUTUBE (2009) I am not sure if
this really is the longest video on YouTube or not, as I have heard
rumors of longer ones, but those seem to incorporate a blank screen. It sure has
gotten attention though, with over 373,000 views in the past year.
Of course the people commenting on
the video take it way too seriously and complain about the video
quality being really
bad, which it is. The reason the quality sucks is because with the low
resolution it only took me 4 hours to upload the video. If the video was in high quality, it would
still probably be uploading... From reading the many comments, it seems
that some people have actually
watched the whole video in one sitting. They are either very patient
people or stupid as hell.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p7PqUdTOqSM MAGIC TRICK-LEVITATING A CAR (2008) I never thought when
I did this video that it would become so popular (with over 178,000
views) While far
from my best work, the reaction to it has been overwhelming and not in
a good way. A lot of
the comments were "fake!" and so forth. I guess it does not help when I
say sarcastically at
the start of the video that "there are no special FX" in the video,
when obviously there are.
This video was also bought off me for a TV show/website hosted by Martin Mull, in which they examine if videos are for real or not. Even they did not realize it was all a joke. When people would comment "there is no shadow on the car!" I would usually reply "that is because there are no shadows in Canada." Some of them probably believed me... You will enjoy reading the various comments far more than the video: LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT (2005) This is one of the
first videos I ever did. It was for a simple looped song my wife
composed. As you
will see, the character I play is sort of like my YouTube character Gus
(who I had not yet
created...)
WEIRD FISH (2009) Once
again, I got a lot of flack for this video, as most of the people who
left comments were notmy subscribers, but people who did a
(serious) search for a weird looking fish. This video has had over58,000 views. The weird looking fish in
this video happens to be me...but most people did not seem to
appreciate I had wasted
their time with the slow build up. Enjoy reading the comments!
EATING CAT FOOD REALLY SUCKS! (2009) This video does not
need much explaining. I had promised my subscribers in November that if
I reached 5000 subscribers by
the end of 2009 that I would eat a tablespoon of cat food in a video. I
reached 5000 on December 1st...and so
it was time to eat crow (or cat food...) I think the best part of this video (besides the slow motion part at the end...) is when I ask my wife Deb what flavor the cat food was and she told me it was tuna. Once I heard that, I figured the cat food might not taste that bad. Boy, was I wrong... LUNCH WITH PAUL TELNER (2008) Along
with edbassmaster, Paul Telner is my favorite YouTube comedian and we
have become friends in the lastcouple of years. I first met
Paul at a YouTube convention in Toronto in the summer of 2008. This is
the second
time I met him, when my wife Deb and I drove to his hometown of Ottawa for the day. (He also visited us at our home with hisfilm crew along with his director (and another friend of mine) Jason. This (rather shocking) footage will be in an upcoming video of Paul's, so I suggest you subscribe to his channel so you don't miss it later on this year. Anyway, this video is about having lunch with Paul and how it got slightly out of hand. Paul loves to push buttons and especiallyget on the nerves of his manager Byron Pascoe. It was great fun watching them argue! BEST BEATBOXER (2009) My
character "Phil McCracken" is fairly popular on YouTube and this is one
of his earlier videos. As you willsee I was still working on his voice
(which would end up in a much higher frequency later on...) Once again,
ifyou
read the comments for this video, you will notice that some people
think Phil is for real (and not very goodat beatboxing or whatever the hell he is
doing.)
I think this is one of my funniest videos and it is all ad libbed (as most of mine are...) Phil might have skills, but it sure is not beatboxing... HOW TO SCARE A CAT (2009) Our
young cat Jinx has always been a nervous cat and even if she walks by
you and you move yourfoot, she will sometimes
jump a foot in the air. I figured this would make for a great video and
so I set up a small remote
controlled car and Jinx jumped really good (twice...) and once again,it's always much cooler and
funnier in slow motion:
I'M A LITTLE TEAPOT (2008) Over time I became
fairlygood at video effects, and this is one of my earlier videos
(actually recorded in 2006) in which the effects are kind of cool. This is a well known
song performed by the punk band Techno Star Rebels, who let me
use it to make a video and this is the result: TORMENT (2009) Not all of my videos
are comedy, as I occasionally like to do something serious, and this is
one of them. I had
asked a fellow YouTuber (Timothy Wyatt) if he could make a song out of
my lyrics for my poem "Torment" and this is the result:
NIPPLE SLIP (2008) This
is a video I did to promote my website (which was called gravetimes.com
at the time.) Since the Janet Jackson "nipple slip"was still in the news, I
decided to do a sort of joke about it, having no idea that the title
would make this video my most viewedvideo of all time (over one
million views as of July 2010) This proved to me that what title you
give your video is important.
FREE GUITAR LESSON (2006) This
is one of the oldest videos on my YouTube page now and it actually had
a lot of views (over 100,000) on another channel, but I asked the
person to take the video off, as he had not credited me (the video did
not link to my channel...)
As usual, a lot of people took this video seriously and a lot of the videos are very negative, but very entertaining to read. I guess it is this video which inspired me to create "Phil McCracken", a guitarist who thinks he is an excellent teacher, even though he can't play for the life of him... HOW TO MAKE A HIT SONG (2010) This is a newer video and it almost was
not released. I had finished one version of the video but
decided to discard it and start from
scratch. I quickly whipped together a new character. Even the namecame just before filming (Manny Morgan
Mitchell the third)
I usually ad lib in my videos but this time there was a bit of a script for each section. I did not think it was that great a video but I uploaded it anyway and was very surpised whenalmost everyone really liked the video and I had more than one comment that the characterwas great. It just goes to show you that you never really know what will be a "hit"...and I guess Manny will make another appearance some day. STUDMUFFIN STUDIOS (2010) I
get asked quite often how I come up with my video ideas and this is a
prime example of the way I work.We have a small
8' by 6' "recording booth" in our basement, which is packed away in a
small closet when notin use, although
it can be partially used even in the closet. I passed by the closet one
day and I instantly thought"that would make
for a fairly funny commercial"... and a new video was born.
BEST CAT VIDEO EVER! (2010) My
one cat Ernie has appeared in quite a few of my videos. What is cool
about Ernie is he seemsto know he is
being filmed. His subtle expressions seem to just fit in perfectly with
whatever I am doing,
as
in this rather silly video. Ernie truly is the star of the videos he is
in.
